About Tripadvisor The Tripadvisor Group connects people to experiences worth sharing, and aims to be the world’s most trusted source for travel and experiences. We leverage our brands, technology, and capabilities to connect our global audience with partners through rich content, travel guidance, and two-sided marketplaces for experiences, accommodations, restaurants, and other travel categories. The subsidiaries of Tripadvisor, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRIP), include a portfolio of travel brands and businesses, including Tripadvisor, Viator, and TheFork. At Tripadvisor experiences, the only thing we love more than travel is data. We slice it, we dice it, and we use it to empower our decision making. What You will do: As a Data Scientist on our experimentation team you will work with product teams across Viator to measure whether the changes they ship actually worked, defining the metrics that matter and making sure the decisions that follow are sound. Part of your contribution is making experimentation easier for the teams you support, through reusable tooling, clear documentation and consistent practice. Viator sells experiences that travellers often book once a year, in a marketplace where supply is finite and shared, so you will be learning to navigate problems where the obvious analysis can give the wrong answer, with support from senior practitioners who have done it before. You will: Design and analyse experiments end to end with the product teams you support, working directly with the Product Managers and Engineers who will act on the results. Turn product questions into testable hypotheses with pre-registered primary metrics, appropriate guardrails, and an honest view of what the available traffic can and cannot detect before the experiment starts. Define and instrument feature-level metrics, understanding how metric choice affects sensitivity, interpretation and the decision a team is trying to make. Investigate results properly, checking assignment integrity, exposure and data quality before conclusions are drawn, and treating a surprising result as something to diagnose rather than announce. Build reusable queries, tooling and templates and apply our shared protocols, so teams can run good experiments faster and with less rework. Communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including inconclusive and negative results, with a recommendation attached rather than a table of numbers. Look beyond whether a change worked to why it worked, and flag when a result may not hold for other users, markets or time periods. Carry out analysis beyond experiments, including opportunity sizing, funnel and behavioural analysis, and observational measurement where randomisation isn't possible. Document hypotheses, designs, outcomes and decisions so results remain comparable and the organisation compounds what it learns. Grow your own depth in experimentation and causal inference, with review and mentorship from senior and principal data scientists. Skills & Experience Experience: Solid experience in data science or a similar quantitative role, supporting and influencing product teams. Statistical & Experimentation Foundations: Sound understanding of experimentation beyond running it through a platform, including statistical power and minimum detectable effect, the difference between an inconclusive result and no effect, why peeking and post-hoc metric selection cause problems, and the common ways an experiment can be invalid. Technical & Modelling Expertise: Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with hands-on experience of statistical analysis and experimentation, and some exposure to statistical modelling or machine learning techniques such as regression and classification. Product Acumen: Ability to define, implement and operationalise product and feature-level metrics, with support from senior colleagues on the most complex cases. Partnership: Experience working closely with Product Managers and Engineers as a trusted partner, and a willingness to make things easier for those teams through tooling, documentation and consistent practice. Critical Thinking: A habit of asking whether a result is trustworthy before asking what it means, and comfort saying so when it isn't. Communication: Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain statistical reasoning to people without a statistical background and to hold your position constructively when a result is unwelcome. Education: Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or a related quantitative field. You could be an especially great fit if you have: Experience with metrics that are difficult to measure, such as sparse conversion, heavy-tailed revenue, or slow-to-observe outcomes. Familiarity with variance reduction techniques and why they matter for sensitivity. Exposure to causal inference methods for situations where randomisation isn't available. Experience with SaaS experimentation tools such as Statsig, Eppo or GrowthBook, or with an in-house platform. Experience in a high-scale consumer product environment such as a marketplace, e-commerce or travel platform. An interest in how modern AI tooling can make analysis faster and experimentation more accessible to product teams. We strive to create an accessible and inclusive experience for all candidates. If you need a reasonable accommodation during the application or the recruiting process, please make sure to reach out to your individual recruiter or our team at AccessibleRecruiting@tripadvisor.com . Senior Data Scientist, Experimentation

What You will do: As a Senior Data Scientist on our experimentation team you will work across a range of product areas, acting as the partner that Product and Engineering teams rely on to know how to set up and run investigations, whether a change worked and why it worked. Much of your impact will come from improving how those teams experiment rather than running their experiments for them: the metrics, guidance, tooling and protocols that let them move quickly without sacrificing rigour. You will also lead the measurement problems a standard A/B test cannot answer, where traffic is limited, users compete for the same supply, or the outcomes that matter take months to appear. You will: Own the experimentation and measurement strategy for your domain, from how questions are framed through to how decisions are made and reviewed. Provide the guidance, tooling and protocols that improve your partner teams' experimentation velocity without sacrificing rigour. Lead the design of experiments where a standard A/B test is not sufficient, including low-traffic surfaces, users competing for the same supply, long-horizon or censored outcomes, and changes that cannot be cleanly randomised. Go beyond whether a change worked to why it worked and whether it generalises across users, markets and time. Assess how the decisions your teams make affect platform health and growth, and raise it when short-term wins carry a longer-term cost. Define and operationalise the metric framework for your domain, including guardrails and proxies for outcomes that take too long to observe directly. Improve the sensitivity of measurement in your area through metric design, variance reduction and better exposure definition, so teams can detect the effects they care about in a realistic timeframe. Standardise the recurring analytical and experimentation processes in your domain, using automation and AI capabilities where they improve consistency or save time. Influence roadmap and prioritisation through evidence, including advocating against work when the evidence doesn't support it. Raise technical quality in the teams you work with by reviewing experiment designs and analyses, and mentoring less experienced data scientists. Skills & Experience: Experience: Extensive experience in data science or a similar quantitative role, with a proven track record of supporting and influencing a product organisation. Statistical & Experimentation Expertise: Authoritative command of experimentation in all its forms, from experimental design and variance reduction to causal inference, bandits and Bayesian methods. You should be able to develop and validate methodology, not only apply it. Technical & Modelling Expertise: Expert level proficiency in Python and SQL. Deep, hands-on experience with statistical modelling, (quasi) experimentation, multi-arm bandits, and a wide range of machine learning techniques such as regression, classification and clustering. Product Acumen: Demonstrated ability to define, implement and operationalise crucial product and feature-level metrics from scratch. Partnership & Enablement: Demonstrated ability to improve how other teams work by providing guidance, tooling and protocols, increasing both the speed and the quality of their experimentation rather than absorbing the work yourself. Decision Impact & Platform Health: Ability to critically assess how product decisions affect platform health and growth over time, and to bring that perspective into how experiments are designed and interpreted. Standardising at Scale: Experience standardising processes, frameworks or methods across multiple teams, including the use of AI and automation to make good practice the default. Cross-Functional Partnership: Proven ability to build strong relationships and drive outcomes across Product, Engineering, Data Platform and other central functions, often without direct authority. Critical Thinking: Leader in critical thinking, with a demonstrated habit of establishing whether a result is trustworthy before establishing what it means. Communication: Exceptional ability to explain measurement, method and uncertainty clearly to technical and non-technical audiences at every level. Education: Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or a related quantitative field. You could be an especially great fit if you have: Experience with experimentation in a marketplace, where interference between users and shared supply complicate measurement. Experience with variance reduction beyond a single pre-period covariate, and a view on what works when the metric of interest is infrequent or heavy-tailed. Experience building or validating proxy metrics for long-horizon outcomes. Exposure to Bayesian approaches, particularly for low-traffic surfaces or pooling evidence across small markets. Experience with SaaS experimentation tools such as Statsig, Eppo or GrowthBook, or with an in-house platform. Experience in a high-scale marketplace, e-commerce or travel platform, and familiarity with the seasonality and long purchase cycles that come with them. Experience improving experimentation practice at team or organisational level through frameworks, tooling or enablement. Experience applying AI or Large Language Model capabilities to improve analytical throughput and experimentation quality. Experience with SaaS experimentation tools such as Statsig, Eppo or GrowthBook, or with an in-house platform. We strive to create an accessible and inclusive experience for all candidates. What You will do: As a Principal Data Scientist you will be a leading individual contributor responsible for how experimentation works across the organisation. You will lead through technical depth, setting the standards others work to and raising the quality of measurement and decision-making across the function. You will build the capability that lets teams experiment well without central support: the standards, tooling and protocols that make good practice the default, and a strategy for how it develops over time. Both the speed and the reliability of decision-making should improve as a result. You will also take on the measurement questions we cannot currently answer well, where traffic is thin or the outcomes that matter take months to appear. You will: Set the technical standard for experimentation across Product Data Science, from conventional A/B testing to quasi-experimental and Bayesian methods, and make it practical through protocols, frameworks and tooling. Partner with Product, Engineering and Data Platform teams to improve experimentation velocity without sacrificing rigour. Critically assess how experimentation and the decisions that follow it affect platform health and growth, and make that relationship visible to leadership. Own the measurement approach for Viator's most complex questions, where standard experimentation is insufficient and the method has to be designed rather than selected. Develop and validate the statistical methods the organisation relies on, including simulation-based verification that they behave correctly before teams depend on them. Act as the final technical authority on measurement validity, adjudicating disputed results and determining what the evidence does and does not support. Standardise recurring analytical and experimentation processes across the function, using automation and AI capabilities where they materially improve consistency, throughput or quality. Design and land methodological improvements with organisation-wide impact, such as variance reduction for difficult metrics, approaches for low-traffic surfaces, proxy and surrogate metrics for long-horizon outcomes, and designs that hold up where users compete for shared supply. Grow the technical depth of the wider team by reviewing designs, mentoring senior data scientists, and improving how people reason about measurement. Advise on where experimentation is the wrong tool and define what should be done instead. Education: Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or a related quantitative field. You could be an especially great fit if you have: Experience with experimentation in a two-sided marketplace, where interference between users and finite shared supply complicate measurement. Experience building and validating proxy or surrogate metrics for long-horizon outcomes, and a clear view of how far they can be trusted. Experience with Bayesian and hierarchical approaches, particularly for low-traffic surfaces or pooling evidence across many small markets. Experience building or materially improving experimentation platforms, measurement frameworks, self-service capabilities or data products. Experience in a high-scale technology company, marketplace, e-commerce business or travel technology organisation, and familiarity with the seasonality and long purchase cycles that come with them. Breadth in statistical modelling and machine learning, such as regression, classification, clustering and bandits, alongside your experimentation depth. Experience applying AI, Large Language Models, agentic AI or automation to improve analytical productivity and decision-making effectiveness. A reputation for raising the standard of thinking and decision-making in every team you join. Platform & Software Engineering Write and review production Java and Python code across our evolving platform stack — from data ingestion and event processing to REST services and internal tooling Architect and scale streaming and batch processing systems (Flink, Spark, Kafka) that power real-time and analytical workloads. Take responsibility for all aspects of software engineering: design, implementation, QA, and maintenance, with a CI/CD mindset (most engineers release to production every few days). Design, operate, and continuously improve cloud infrastructure on AWS, applying strong judgment on performance, scalability, and cost. Technical Leadership, Collaboration & Ownership Lead large size initiatives end to end: technical specs, design reviews, project planning, and delivery across teams. Set and uphold code and data quality through leadership in design and code review, and act as a technical mentor to engineers on the team and in the domains you enable. Translate ambiguous, cross-organizational data problems into clear, standardized solutions, and communicate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders. Work with independence and a mandate to leave things better than you found them, in a fast-paced, globally distributed environment. Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and Data Science leaders to shape specifications, challenge requirements constructively, and deliver high-impact solutions. Skills & Experience 8+ years of data engineering or software development experience in a commercial setting, including a track record of technical leadership on medium-to-large projects. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Experience taking significant projects from design through production, with growing ownership of technical direction Deep experience designing and implementing complex ETL/ELT from concept to production, including SLAs, performance measurement, and monitoring. Comprehensive data design and data modeling experience, and advanced SQL across large, complex datasets. Extensive experience with big data technologies and cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Hadoop/Hive) at terabyte-and-growing scale. Experience building reusable frameworks, platforms, or tooling that other engineers depend on (not just point solutions). Hands-on proficiency in both Python and Java for production systems. Systems performance and tuning expertise, with a clear understanding of how architectural decisions affect scalability and cost. Familiarity building REST services and working with event queue systems. Familiarity with Linux and cloud infrastructure design on AWS or equivalent cloud providers. Comfortable operating with autonomy in loosely defined problem spaces, breaking down complex problems into simple pragmatic solutions, and prioritizing effectively.. Strong interpersonal skills, intense curiosity, and enthusiasm for solving difficult problems. Self-paced, organized, and detail-oriented person with a strong sense of ownership Strong communication skills to effectively communicate with both business and technical teams.
