Every role at Plane is some part of building that. About the role Plane runs across environments we control and environments we never see: Plane Cloud, sovereign clouds, customer-managed infrastructure, self-hosted clusters, and fully air-gapped networks. As a Principal DevOps Engineer, you will own the infrastructure and operational architecture that makes this possible. You will lead how we build, deploy, secure, observe, and operate Plane across these environments, from Kubernetes, GitOps, and CI/CD to databases, incident response, compliance, and infrastructure cost. As Plane expands its agentic capabilities, you will also help build the infrastructure required to securely run AI workloads and open-weight models across cloud and customer data centers. You will work across engineering teams to make deploying and operating Plane reliable, secure, and increasingly automated at every scale. What you'll do Own and operate high-availability, fault-tolerant, scalable, distributed software across cloud and self-hosted deployments. Own and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS. Design and automate infrastructure, CI/CD, GitOps, secrets management, AMIs, and one-click deployments across AWS, DigitalOcean, Heroku, and other platforms. Set up processes to improve visibility across cloud infrastructure. Maintain incident management, disaster recovery, database migrations, and production reliability. Define and strengthen infrastructure security, vulnerability management, SAST, compliance, data governance, and security standards across the organisation. Drive infrastructure performance and cost optimization while improving deployment speed, reliability, and developer experience. What you'll bring You have 10+ years in DevOps, SRE, platform, or infrastructure engineering, and you have owned the systems you built in production. You have run AWS, Kubernetes, and Docker in production and managed secrets. You have managed infrastructure as code with Terraform and Ansible, and shipped changes through CI/CD and GitOps with Argo CD. You have shipped and supported enterprise software across multiple clouds, self-hosted setups, and air-gapped (fully offline) environments. You have managed production Postgres and Redis and moved them between clusters without losing data. You write Python and Bash well. You understand networking, reverse proxies, monitoring, and infrastructure security well enough to debug them in production. Nice to haves You have run bare-metal deployments and worked in restricted enterprise environments. You have deployed and operated open-weight models across public cloud and on-premise data centers. You have worked with serverless architectures and sandboxed execution environments. You have built infrastructure for AI agents or agentic development environments. You have operated infrastructure under compliance, data residency, or sovereign-cloud requirements. Every role at Plane is some part of building that. About the role Plane's client is local-first. State lives in the browser and syncs when the network allows. It has to stay correct when two people edit the same document at once, and when a customer's cluster never touches the internet at all. Agents now act inside those same workspaces, so the interface has to show a change made by a machine as clearly as one made by a colleague. You will own the frontend of that client: the dense views that hold tens of thousands of issues, the collaborative editor, the offline and caching layer under both, and the design system components the rest of the product is built from. Day to day you work with designers, product, and backend engineers in San Francisco and Hyderabad, and your commits land in a public repository where contributors read them. What you'll do Take Plane's frontend to real-time and local-first across work items, boards, documents, and other core product surfaces. Own client-side state, synchronization, caching, offline behavior, and conflict resolution. Own frontend performance in large workspaces: rendering, memory usage, load times, and interaction latency. Set frontend architecture and engineering standards, and review the designs and implementations that carry the most risk. Work with product, design, and backend teams to ship features that hold up from the API to the screen. What you'll bring 10+ years of software engineering experience, with React, TypeScript, and frontend architecture at scale. You have built real-time applications using WebSockets, subscriptions, or event-driven architectures. You have worked on local-first problems: client-side persistence, synchronization, caching, and offline behavior. You have found and fixed frontend performance problems in complex, data-heavy applications. You understand state management and browser architecture, and you design frontend systems other people can maintain. Nice to haves You have built collaborative or multi-user applications with concurrent updates. You have worked with CRDTs, OT, or other synchronization and conflict-resolution approaches. You have built dense products such as project management tools, editors, spreadsheets, or design tools. You have used IndexedDB, Service Workers, virtualization, Web Workers, or similar browser technologies. You have contributed to or maintained large open-source applications.
