About the Role Netskope AI Gateway helps global enterprises securely adopt and scale Generative AI. We are looking for a Staff Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to own quality for significant areas of the AI Gateway product, its supporting services, and its APIs, across SaaS and on-prem/hybrid customer environments. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role with real ownership. The areas assigned to you are yours: you set the testing direction and build what is needed to execute it, bringing hard calls to the QE lead as a peer rather than waiting for a specification or a checklist before you act. Depth matters more than volume in this role. We are looking for someone who can get a long way into an ambiguous problem before needing help, go deep when a failure crosses service, infrastructure, and network boundaries, and work directly with developers and product managers to get the underlying problem fixed rather than routed around. What You Will Be Doing Own Quality for Your Areas: For the features and services assigned to you, own the outcome: reliability, correctness, performance, security-related behaviors, and user experience expectations. Decide what needs testing and at which layer, set the bar for shipping that area, and be accountable for what gets through. Turn Ambiguity into a Plan: Start from partial requirements, an architecture diagram, and a conversation with the developer, and produce a concrete test approach. Surface the risks nobody has written down yet, decide which ones matter, and state clearly what you are choosing not to cover and why. Build the Automation: Design and implement the automated suites and the frameworks, harnesses, and fixtures behind them. Write them as real software: readable, maintainable, and quick to triage when they fail. Keep flakiness low through deterministic test design, environment isolation, and disciplined use of mocking and service virtualization. Use AI Where It Earns Its Place: Bring AI and agent-based tooling into the testing workflow: generating scaffolding and test data, navigating unfamiliar code, summarizing logs and failures, and shortening the path from symptom to hypothesis. Be equally clear about the limits. AI-generated tests can look thorough while asserting nothing that matters, so you check what the assertions actually prove. The tool can draft the work, but the coverage decision and the verdict stay yours. Validate the Gateway Data Path: Verify that AI Gateway stays compatible with the provider APIs it fronts, that policy matches exactly the requests it should, and that the resulting action and logging are correct. Debug Deep and Across Boundaries: Be the person who gets to the bottom of hard failures. Trace problems across microservices, asynchronous workflows, Kubernetes networking, TLS and proxy behavior, and CI infrastructure, and come back with a root cause rather than a reassignment. Keep CI/CD Trustworthy: Integrate your tests into CI/CD with attention to signal-to-noise, parallelization, execution time, and reporting that points at the actual failure. Diagnose pipeline and environment problems instead of retrying around them. Share Production Ownership: Own the production service alongside the rest of the AIG engineering team. Take part in the shared on-call rotation, monitor production health, and troubleshoot and resolve critical production issues. Push Problems Upstream: Work directly with developers and product managers. Raise testability and instrumentation needs while designs are still open, argue for the fixes that prevent whole classes of defects, and make sure recurring failure patterns change how the next feature is built. Write bug reports a developer can act on immediately: reproduction steps, logs, traces, and a clear statement of impact. What Success Looks Like The areas you own ship with high confidence, and the defects that do escape are rare and understood. A vague problem handed to you comes back as a clear plan, a working suite, and an explicit list of the risks you accepted. Hard cross-boundary failures land with you and leave with a root cause. Your automation is trusted: when it fails, people believe something is actually broken. AI makes the work faster, and the coverage still holds up when someone reviews it. Developers change designs because of risks you raised early, and the same defect does not come back twice. Required Skills and Experience Experience: 8+ years in software quality engineering / SDET / test automation, including 5+ years on distributed systems, cloud services, or security/networking products. You have owned quality for a substantial product area with little supervision. Autonomy: Track record of taking an under-specified problem and driving it to a working solution, including deciding what not to do. Comfortable being the only person working on something. Programming: Strong software engineering skills in Python (preferred) or Golang. You write automation, libraries, and tooling that hold up as production software rather than as scripts. AI-Assisted Engineering: Practical experience using LLM-based tools or coding agents in real engineering work, and a clear view of where they help and where they mislead. You can point to a case where you caught what the AI missed. Debugging Depth: Demonstrated ability to isolate root cause in complex failures spanning services, infrastructure, and the network layer, rather than escalating them onward. API and Distributed Systems Testing: Extensive hands-on experience testing REST APIs, microservices, and asynchronous workflows. Test Design: Deep command of test strategy, risk-based testing, and layered test design; able to make and defend explicit trade-offs on coverage, cost, execution time, and confidence. CI/CD: Proven ability to build and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines and the infrastructure that keeps large test suites reliable. Containers and Kubernetes: Strong experience running and testing services on Docker/Kubernetes, and debugging failures involving networking, service discovery, and configuration. Networking: Solid working knowledge of HTTP/S, TLS, proxy/gateway concepts, DNS, and the failure modes that affect AI Gateway deployments. Defect Management: Excellent defect isolation, triage, and tracking discipline (e.g., Jira), with follow-through until the systemic fix lands. Working with Engineering and Product: Able to hold a technical discussion with developers as a peer and to explain risk and trade-offs to product managers clearly. Exceptional verbal and written English for complex technical collaboration. Nice to Have GenAI Ecosystem: Familiarity with the request and response schemas of major LLM provider APIs, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or Bedrock, including their streaming formats and how these APIs change over time. Cloud Platforms: Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP, and validating hybrid/on-prem customer deployments. Cybersecurity: Knowledge of secure web development, ZTNA, DLP, and proxy/gateway product concepts. Performance and Scale: Experience designing load and performance tests and analyzing latency/throughput for high-traffic APIs and gateways. Resilience Testing: Fault injection, chaos, or failure-mode testing of distributed services. An agent doesn't go from a developer's laptop to production in one step here — it moves through a staged pipeline with real gates at every stage, then spends its first two weeks in production under close review before anyone trusts it to act on its own. As a Senior Agent Release Engineer, you'll own that entire path: the CI/CD pipeline every agent and every model change moves through, the automated checks that decide whether a release is safe to promote, and the rollback plan for when something isn't. You'll also own model tiering — making sure each agent is running on the model tier that actually fits its task, since that's one of the biggest cost levers on a platform running well over a hundred agents at once. If you like turning "we hope this works" into "here's the automated gate that proves it," this is that role. Skills and competencies: Own and continuously improve the CI/CD pipeline every agent and every model or prompt change moves through, from initial commit through sandbox, development, and staging, before anything reaches production. Design and maintain the automated gates that decide whether a release is safe to promote — evaluation score thresholds, security scan results, guardrail test results — so a human isn't manually eyeballing test output before every promotion. Own progressive rollout for model and agent changes: canary a change to a small slice of traffic or sessions first, watch the quality and cost metrics live, and only promote to full traffic once those metrics hold. Build and maintain the rollback path for every stage of the pipeline, so that a bad release can be reversed in minutes, not hours, and so the trigger conditions for rollback are automatic rather than someone noticing a problem by chance. Own model tiering across the agent fleet: routing agents to the model tier that actually fits their task complexity, and adjusting that routing as usage patterns or model pricing change. Manage the shadow-period process for newly promoted agents, making sure the right metrics and review checkpoints are actually in place and visible before an agent moves from shadow to fully autonomous operation. Run model version regression testing whenever a new model version becomes available, confirming existing agents don't silently degrade before that version gets adopted anywhere in production. Partner with the Agent Runtime Engineer on the runtime side of releases to quickly troubleshoot issues in case of a bad rollout. Must-Have: At least 5 years in CI/CD, release engineering, or MLOps, including 1–2 years releasing LLM or agent-based systems specifically. Has designed and run a progressive rollout strategy (canary, shadow, or blue-green) for something stateful or model-driven, with automatic rollback triggers built in from the start, not a person noticing a problem and rolling back by hand. Every agent on this platform runs inside its own isolated environment, and someone has to make sure that environment actually behaves the way it's supposed to under real load, not just in a clean test run. As a Senior Agent Runtime Engineer , you'll own the health of the systems agents run on: keeping sessions isolated from each other, catching the failure modes that only show up under real concurrency, and making sure a slow or expensive agent gets caught before it becomes everyone's problem. You'll work closely with the engineers building the agents themselves, since you're often the first call when something behaves strangely in a real environment but not in a test one. If you like being the person who understands a system well enough to know exactly why it's misbehaving, this is that job. Skills and competencies: Own the health of the agent execution environment day to day — session isolation, resource limits, and catching the failure modes that only appear once real concurrency and real traffic patterns show up, not just in a clean test run. Investigate and resolve cases where an agent behaves differently in production than it did in testing, working directly with the Agent Engineer or Quality Engineer who built it to figure out whether the problem is the agent's design or the environment it's running in. Tune cold-start and concurrency settings for the platform's critical-path functions, and review them on a regular cadence as usage patterns shift rather than setting them once and forgetting them. Understand the platform's session isolation model well enough to reason about its limits — where isolation is guaranteed by the underlying compute layer, and where the platform has to add its own controls because that guarantee doesn't fully hold. Build and maintain the observability that lets someone answer "is this agent actually working correctly," not just "is it technically up" — tracing, behavioral drift detection, and quality signals sitting alongside the usual metrics and logs. Track per-agent and per-session cost and efficiency, and flag agents that are burning more tokens, calling more tools, or running longer than the task should reasonably require. Deploy and manage runtime-layer infrastructure resources through existing CI/CD pipelines as needed — provisioned concurrency settings, runtime-specific IAM roles, observability configurations, etc. Run and improve the tests that validate isolation actually holds — for example, confirming that one agent's session genuinely can't reach or affect another's, not just assuming it because the platform is supposed to guarantee it. Must-Have: At least 5 years in a platform, SRE, or infrastructure engineering role, with real production experience running serverless or containerized workloads on AWS (Lambda, Fargate, Docker, Kubernetes or equivalent) at meaningful scale. Hands-on experience with AWS observability tooling (CloudWatch, X-Ray, or a comparable distributed tracing stack) — able to go from "something's wrong" to a root cause using traces and logs, not just dashboards. Real experience deploying and managing infrastructure through CI/CD independently — comfortable owning IaC changes (Terraform, CDK, or similar) end to end rather than handing them off to someone else. Working understanding of compute isolation concepts (containers, microVMs, or similar sandboxing models) and where their guarantees actually stop, since a lot of this role is reasoning about the edges of what a platform promises versus what it might not fully cover on its own. Comfort investigating cost and performance problems at a granular level — able to trace an unexpectedly expensive or slow workload back to a specific cause, not just flag that costs went up. Strong incident response instincts: staying calm and methodical while root-causing a live production issue, and following through with an actual fix rather than a workaround. Strong Advantage: Direct experience with AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, or any managed AI/agent runtime platform.
