💫 This job description was written by a person About Us Since 2013, we’ve been building a CRM that gets out of your way and helps your team sell more, faster. Now we’re building AI into every part of it, so Close does the busywork and your team does the selling. No manual data entry, no 10-click workflows. Just communication-first, AI-powered sales software designed to help you succeed and scale. We're bootstrapped and profitable which means we answer to our customers and play by our rules. We're proud of our 120-person, 100% remote team, focused on building Close so that no small, scaling business fails because it can't figure out sales. About the Role One of our values is “Build a house you want to live in.” In this metaphor, Close.com is the front door. Our website is where people learn about who we are, what we do and, even more importantly, it’s a critical touch point on their journey to becoming a Close customer. We’re dedicated to making it best-in-class. We’ve recently migrated from Webflow to our own codebase (Astro, Sanity, Vercel) so a new and improved foundation is in place. We believe building in-house gives us the flexibility, creativity, and speed to make our website a competitive advantage - this is where our first Sr. Frontend Engineer - Marketing comes in. As the technical owner of the website, you’ll be responsible for maintaining, optimizing, and instrumenting Close.com . You’ll work closely with Marketing, including a Marketing Designer, but report up through Engineering. You are A marketing website engineer. You’ve built beautiful, conversion-focused websites for a while now - probably 5+ years. You may have worked in an agency, but you’ve also had to build, own, and collaborate on websites long-term - seeing your work through impact and likely many iterations. Motion, ambitious CSS, and rich media are second nature, and you sweat page speed and how the site reads to both search engines and AI agents as much as how cool it looks. A modern stack like Astro paired with a headless CMS (Sanity is ours) is familiar territory to you. Fluent in measurement. The sites you build aren’t only beautiful, but they’re well-measured too. You understand cookies, conversion events, analytics, and experimentation tooling, and you've worked with tools like Segment, Amplitude, or Customer.io . Focused on conversion and fueled by impact. We’re primarily a self-service SMB business and that means that Close.com isn’t just a brand experience. It’s a critical part of our acquisition funnel. This means that your work will have a direct effect on some of our most important business metrics - traffic, conversion, revenue. You’re the type who finds this motivating and is eager to parter with Marketing and Growth to move these numbers. Energized by empowering non-technical team members. You’ve built systems that allow Marketers or Designers to self-serve and solve problems quickly and independently. You’re comfortable thinking through guardrails, automations, and tooling. Already building with AI. You use AI to move faster and empower your team but are equally discerning about which moments require craftsmanship and taste. Resourceful and collaborative. You’ll bridge two teams (Marketing and Engineering) and will need to easily work with folks across departments and levels. No tweak or task is too small (or too big) for you to tackle. You will Build and continuously improve a world-class marketing website. We want close.com to be responsive, highly interactive, and polished. The kind of site that brings the product to life through animation and interactivity. You'll ship new pages and continue raising the bar on core site functionality. Make the site fast and findable. You’ll own performance, technical SEO, and how the site shows up to search engines and AI agents. Manage the infrastructure behind the site. The platform (Sanity), components, integrations, and deployment are for you to maintain and evolve. Own the technical integrity of site measurement and partner on experiments. Make sure tracking, attribution, conversion events, and funnel data are implemented correctly and reliably flow into our marketing and data systems. Build tools that let Marketing self-serve...and help the site self-improve. You’ll build automations and flows to help the team ship pages, campaigns, and experiments, but you’ll also help the website be a partner in its own development - be it catching regressions or flagging performance problems and SEO issues. The website of the future is a surface for collaboration between you, the marketing team, and AI agents. Stretch beyond the site and act as an engineering resource to marketing. The website is your focus, but there’s a lot of work to be done! You’ll be a resource for solving tricky problems, across the website and in other areas of marketing - sometimes that means hopping in yourself, or just knowing when to loop in the right person. Benefits Compensation: Competitive pay plus an organization-wide goal-based bonus Paid Time Off: ~5 weeks of PTO to start. Plus a 1-week all-company Winter Holiday Break and paid US holidays. You'll earn 2 extra days for every year you're with Close. 80% Work Option: Work with your manager to choose between a standard 5-day week or a 4-day week at 80% pay Parental Leave: Paid leave for primary and secondary caregivers Sabbatical: A 1-month paid sabbatical every 5 years with the team Healthcare (US residents): Two medical plans with Close covering 99% of your premium, plus Dental, Vision, HSA, FSA, and company-paid Long-Term Disability 401k (US residents): We match your contributions up to 6%, vested immediately Our Values Build a house you want to live in - Examine long-term thinking and action No BS - Practice transparency and honesty, especially when it’s hard Invest in each other - Build successful relationships with your coworkers and customers Discipline equals freedom - Keep your word to yourself and others Strive for greatness - Constantly challenge yourself and others Learn More Listen to our CEO and Founder, Steli Efti, tell the story of Close’s journey in the $0-30m Blueprint . Watch our culture video from our 2023 team retreat in Milan. Every year our entire team gathers in person to build connection, foster cross-functional collaboration, and have fun. In 2027, we're headed to Dusseldorf, Germany! Explore our product. Check out a demo ! Our Hiring Process We ask a few role-specific questions as part of our application process. These questions are designed to help us learn more about you from the start, so please answer each one thoughtfully. We see this as an opportunity to get to know you beyond your resume. We use AI tools daily at Close and expect candidates to do the same. In evaluating your application, we aim to get a sense for you - the way you think, how you communicate, the work you've done. Applications that read as fully AI-generated will not be considered. Regardless of fit, you can expect to hear back from our team with an update on the status of your candidacy. If you progress to the interview process, you'll receive a full outline of the role-specific steps in your first touchpoint with us. We do our best to make the hiring process clear and human. About Us Since 2013, we’ve been building a CRM that gets out of your way and helps your team sell more, faster. Our Stack Our backend tech stack consists primarily of Python Flask web apps with our TaskTiger scheduler handling many of the backend asynchronous task processing chores. Our data stores include MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis. The underlying infrastructure runs on AWS using a combination of managed services like EKS, MSK, RDS and ElastiCache and non-managed services running on EC2 instances. We have CI/CD pipelines that build Docker images, run automated tests and deploy to Kubernetes clusters. We also use these images in our local development environment allowing coding locally against all of our services. We have a well-documented public API that is consumed by our front-end JavaScript app as well as numerous integrations. Our infrastructure is heavily automated using Terraform, Ansible and other AWS tools. We love open sourcing our code and ideas on our GitHub and on The Making of Close , our behind-the-scenes Product & Engineering blog. Check out our open source projects like SocketShark , TaskTiger , LimitLion and ciso8601 . AI is both how we build and what we ship, and that's reshaped what engineering looks like. This is a transformation we’re embracing and find deeply exciting. About the Role The CRM team owns everything that Close’s customers touch all day, every day: leads, contacts, opportunities, tasks, activities, custom objects, and search. Each time a call is logged, an email is threaded, a meeting is summarized, it lands on the record this team owns, and every agent we ship starts there. Today, this team is making big moves towards the next iteration of Close's core data model, our largest engineering effort currently underway. We're reopening assumptions made a decade ago and asking what a modern CRM's data model should look like — one that makes Close flexible for our small, scaling business customers. This is a long series of migrations and rearchitecture projects. If you like greenfield and you like hairy, this is both: help design the next version of Close, and untangle the current one. One thing to know: we do move people between teams as the work shifts. Most engineers here end up on more than one team over their time at Close — this team is where you'd start, but over time you'll likely have the opportunity to work on many different projects. You are A seasoned engineer. Python is our backbone, but perhaps you've worked across Go, Rust, or TypeScript. You pick the right tool for the workload rather than retreating to what you know. Architecturally minded. This is the thing we care about most. You've designed systems others built on, planned a migration that couldn't take the product down, and know how to sequence a rearchitecture into pieces that ship independently. Drawn to data model and retrieval problems. Schemas, relationships, normalization, query design, type systems. The plumbing decides whether a CRM feels fast and we pride ourselves on being fast. Experienced in search — this is a serious bonus. Elasticsearch especially, and anything adjacent: Lucene internals, query planning, relevance, indexing at scale, building or operating a search engine. AI-native in production. You've shipped meaningful LLM-backed or agentic features to real users, and you have a POV on where AI earns its place in a CRM workflow and where a structured system wins. Working with AI in your day-to-day. You use AI tools in your own workflow to ship faster, write tighter code, and reason about unfamiliar parts of the codebase. We fund best-in-class developer tools and treat experimentation as part of the work. Battle-tested. You've debugged incidents where latency budgets didn't hold, owned a system everyone else relied on, or carried a pager for something with real customer impact. A builder first. You'd rather get a sloppy v1 in front of fifty customers than spend three weeks on abstractions. You ship. You will Rearchitect the core CRM data model. Rework how leads, contacts, opportunities, and custom objects relate to each other so each of our customers can represent their business the way it operates. Make Close usable by agents. The Agents team builds the MCP foundation; we build the tools and endpoints on top of it that expose the CRM's data and actions. The hard part is search: any MCP-compatible harness should be able to traverse, filter, and reason over a customer's CRM without learning our private query language first. Ship AI-native CRM features. This team built agentic enrichment: instead of paying a third-party data provider, an agent goes and researches whatever field you need, in bulk or automatically inside a workflow. There's a lot more of this ahead, including AI-powered data cleaning and richer AI search. Keep the hot paths fast. Finding a lead, updating a deal, scanning a pipeline, running a bulk action. Salespeople do these hundreds of times a week and no amount of clever architecture matters if they're slow. Tech you'll touch: Python, Flask, FastAPI, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, Redis, TaskTiger, MCP — plus whichever LLM ships next. Check out our open source projects like SocketShark , TaskTiger , LimitLion and ciso8601 . AI is both how we build and what we ship, and that's reshaped what engineering looks like. This is a transformation we’re embracing and find deeply exciting. About the Role Close runs on Python: Flask web apps, TaskTiger, billions of MongoDB documents, a public REST API that customers and external agents both build on. Four product teams ship features on top of that every week. Backend Platforms owns the foundation underneath it all. As an Engineer on our Backend Platforms team, you’re building for other engineers. When a product team adds a new API endpoint, most of what they write isn't their feature — it's wiring: authentication, permissions, rate limiting, the shape the endpoint has to take so it looks like every other endpoint when you squint. Multiply that across telemetry, eventing, database migrations, authorization, and local development, and you get the problem this team exists to solve: make the paved road faster to walk than the trail. The other half of the team's mandate is the AI development platform. We've built DevDawg, cloud-based development environments preconfigured for our entire application stack and our engineering practices, and Spice, our extension layer on top of a coding agent that runs internal review workflows and root cause analysis. Spice is hooked into GitHub and can already approve mergeable pull requests on its own for simple changes. This team is responsible for expanding what it can safely handle. This is a new team. You would be one of the first hires, and you'd have unusual influence over what the team owns and how it operates. One thing to know: we do move people between teams as the work shifts. Most engineers here end up on more than one team over their time at Close — this team is where you'd start, but over time you'll likely have the opportunity to work on many different projects. This role is open at the Senior and Staff levels. You don't need to pick one when you apply: we'll calibrate together during the process. You are A seasoned Python engineer. Python is our backbone and it matters in this role more than on other teams at Close. Architectural patterns don't port cleanly between languages, and you'll be setting the patterns. Go, Rust, or TypeScript alongside it is welcome. Drawn to meta-problems. This team doesn't ship features to customers; it changes how features get built. AI-native in production. You've shipped meaningful LLM-backed or agentic work to real users. For a team building AI tooling that other engineers depend on, this is foundational to the role. Working with AI in your day-to-day. You use coding agents in your own workflow and have a real POV on where they help and where they get in the way. On this team, your POV becomes the product. We fund best-in-class developer tools and treat experimentation as part of the work. Fluent in observability and production practice. Telemetry, metrics, tracing, alerting, Sentry ownership, what production-ready actually means. You've been the person who made a system legible when it broke. Opinionated about API design. You've shipped internet-facing APIs and you think about who's on the other end — apps, agents, humans reading docs — and what each needs. Battle-tested. You've debugged incidents where latency budgets didn't hold, owned a system everyone else relied on, or carried a pager for something with real customer impact. A builder first. You'd rather get a rough v1 in front of five engineers than spend three weeks on abstractions. Energized by internal customers. Your users are a Slack DM away. You'll talk to them directly instead of through a PM, and you'll use most of what you build yourself. You will Expand DevDawg and Spice. Cloud development environments for our full stack, paired with automated review and root-cause tooling that can approve real pull requests. Making that safe enough to cover more of our review surface is one of the team's biggest projects. Build the paved roads for our API layer. REST blueprints, GraphQL schema, OpenAPI, realtime, and the auth and permission plumbing that every endpoint needs. Consistent patterns are what make shared utilities possible. Modernize the backend framework layer. Web and async compute frameworks, performance, and migration paths (Flask → FastAPI, among others) — with clear defaults, examples, and migrations teams can adopt without asking permission. Own how we see production. Observability, metrics, alerting, and the readiness bar teams meet before shipping. When the same issues keep showing up in incident reviews, you make sure the underlying cause gets owned rather than re-triaged. Ship shared backend services and primitives. Eventing patterns and the event log, database-change safety and migration guardrails, delegated access and auditability, the internal admin framework and support-facing APIs. Set the guardrails for coding agents in our backend. Static analysis, linting, hooks, test harnesses — the constraints that make agent-written code safe to merge at volume. Partner across the org. Infrastructure owns the substrate (AWS, Kubernetes, datastores); you own the application layer on top. Tech you'll touch: Python, Flask, FastAPI, GraphQL, TaskTiger, Rust, Typescript, Kafka, Redis, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions — plus whatever coding agent ships next. Benefits Compensation: Competitive pay plus an organization-wide goal-based bonus Paid Time Off: ~5 weeks of PTO to start. Plus a 1-week all-company Winter Holiday Break and paid US holidays.
